BEYOND THE FIRST VISA

A Strategic Approach to Immigration & Investments Abroad

Immigration decisions can have consequences far beyond obtaining a visa. Strategic structuring must evaluate taxation, capital movement, and long-term residency objectives:

01

Do you know the preferred countries to study in, to align with your life goals?

02

Do you know the best countries to buy property in, looking beyond the usual rankings, prices & rental yields?

03

Do you consider entry taxes, country ownership rules, citizenship opportunities and even how easily you can move your money out of the country after selling off the property often have just as much influence on the final return?

04

Do Tax “havens” like Switzerland work the same today like they used to earlier?

05

How do taxes, banking, residency and lifestyle define the best country to study and live in Europe?

06

Do you know that for Bitcoin holders in some countries, leaving can trigger tax on unrealised gains before a single coin is sold?

Newer countries are launching Golden Visa programs with investor residency options. Zero percent Tax considerations, establishing correct investment structures, family circumstances, business interests, education, lifestyle and long-term residency objectives can all influence which destination and immigration pathway is most appropriate.

At FinLex, we therefore look beyond the popular countries. Our multidisciplinary approach is designed to help you make informed, strategic decisions before you commit to a particular route or destination.

Digital Nomad Visa Countries 2026 Map

Digital Nomad Visa Countries (2026) — More than 50 jurisdictions offer formal remote residency frameworks.

What is a Digital Nomad Visa?

A digital nomad visa is a temporary residence permit for people who earn income from employers or clients outside the country they live in. It sits between a tourist visa, which allows no work and a work visa, which ties you to a local employer. More than 50 countries now offer one.

Indian citizens can currently apply in countries including Croatia, Germany, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Thailand and Mauritius, among others. These permits let you live abroad legally while working for Indian or foreign firms.

What most countries ask for:

Most programs ask for the same core proof, with monthly income thresholds typically between about $2,500 and $5,000:

  • Proof of steady remote income, usually three to six months of bank statements, pay slips or client contracts
  • An employment letter or business registration showing your work is based outside the host country
  • Health insurance for your full stay
  • A police clearance certificate from India and any other country you have recently lived in
  • A valid passport, with plenty of validity left
  • Italy also expects a degree and six months of remote work experience.

How Popular Programs Compare

Thresholds run from about €2,849 a month in Spain to €4,500 net in Estonia, and only Spain, Portugal, Greece and Italy offer a clear route to long-term residency.

Country Income Requirement Stay Length Route to Long-Term Residency
Spain €2,849 / month Up to 3 years, renewable Yes
Portugal (D8) €3,680 / month 2-year renewable permit Yes, citizenship possible after 5 years
Greece €3,500 / month 1 year, then 2-year permit Yes, with renewals
Croatia €3,622.50 / month 18 months, no renewal No
Estonia €4,500 / month (net) Up to 1 year No
Italy About €28,000–30,000 / year 1 year, renewable Yes, with renewals
Thailand (DTV) THB 500,000 in savings 5-year visa, 180 days per stay No

Two More Worth Knowing About:

• Albania has one of the lowest income requirements anywhere, at around €338 a month.

• Sri Lanka introduced a digital nomad visa in February 2026 and also extended visa-free travel for Indian tourists.

Note on Taiwan: Taiwan has a nomad visa, but its official immigration page limits it to nationals of visa-exempt countries, so Indian citizens likely cannot use it. Eligibility can depend on nationality for any program, so confirm that Indian citizens qualify before you start.

CLARITY & REGULATORY GUIDANCE

Frequently Asked Questions

Transparent answers regarding Global Education stay-back rights, RBI vs. CBI distinctions, OECD tax residency, and Indian FEMA/LRS remittances.

Requirements vary by country, but generally include a valid passport, university admission/offer letter, proof of funds (bank statements or sponsor letters), academic transcripts and mark sheets, and a language proficiency score (IELTS/TOEFL or equivalent). We confirm the exact list once we know your target country and course.
Most countries allow limited part-time work during term-time. After graduation, several countries offer a post-study stay-back visa that lets you work and transition into a longer-term visa once you have a job offer. We help you choose a country whose stay-back and work rights actually match your career goals, not just the university ranking.
In many countries, yes. A student visa can be the first step in a longer pathway. The usual route is: student visa → post-study work permit → skilled work visa (often needs a job offer) → permanent residency, once you meet time-in-country, salary or points-based criteria.

Some countries make this easier than others — for example, Canada's Post-Graduation Work Permit feeds directly into Express Entry's Canadian Experience Class and Hong Kong's IANG period counts toward the 7-year PR timeline. Others, like the US, have a much narrower and longer route (F-1 → OPT → H-1B → Green Card) with more competition at each stage. FinLex helps you assess this pathway country-by-country as part of planning, since it can matter more than the university ranking itself.
Residency by investment = the right to live in a country.
Citizenship by investment = becoming a citizen of that country, usually with a passport.

The table below clearly explains the difference between both:
Comparison Table Residency by Investment (RBI) Citizenship by Investment (CBI)
What you obtain Residence permit / permanent residence Citizenship + passport
Nationality changes? No Yes
Right to live there Usually yes, subject to program rules Yes, as a citizen
Passport of that country No Yes
Voting/citizen rights Generally no Generally yes, although some CBI programs can impose limitations
Physical presence Often some minimum residence requirement Often minimal or no prior residence requirement, depending on country
Path to citizenship Often possible later Citizenship is the immediate objective
Investment Usually required Usually required
Processing Often more immigration-oriented Usually more citizenship/due-diligence oriented
Getting a residence permit does not automatically make you a tax resident and getting citizenship does not necessarily make you tax resident either. Tax residency is determined under the particular country's tax rules. The OECD specifically distinguishes immigration/residence rights from tax residence.
In many countries, this is essentially a residence-by-investment route rather than a passport-for-investment route. It grants legal European or global residency rights in exchange for qualifying real estate or capital fund investments.
It depends on your income and goals. Thailand's DTV is popular because it uses a savings test rather than a monthly income test. Greece is known for quick approvals, Croatia for straightforward paperwork, and Albania for a very low income bar. For long-term European residency, Spain and Portugal are the usual choices.
Depends entirely on the program and investment route chosen; general government contributions are typically non-refundable, while qualifying real estate may be resold after a required holding period.
Any legitimate immigration adviser cannot guarantee an approval because the final decision rests with the relevant government, immigration authority, consulate, or programme authority.

What FinLex can guarantee is the quality and integrity of our process. We are an ethical company to work with. We do not fudge documents, misrepresent facts, or promise outcomes that are outside our control.

Our approach is simple: we recommend only pathways where we believe you have a genuine and realistic basis to apply and we tell you honestly when a route is not suitable. We cannot guarantee the government's decision. We can guarantee professional, transparent and compliance-focused advice.
The Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS) is an RBI framework that allows resident individuals in India to remit money overseas for permitted purposes, subject to applicable rules and limits.

Under the current framework, a resident individual can generally remit up to USD 250,000 per financial year under LRS for permitted transactions. This can include purposes such as overseas education, travel, medical expenses, gifts, investments and certain overseas asset purchases.
If you are an Indian resident planning to:
  • fund your child's education overseas
  • purchase an eligible property or investment overseas
  • make an investment as part of an investment-migration programme
  • transfer funds for permitted family or personal purposes abroad
you may need to consider your available LRS limit, the purpose of the remittance, documentation and applicable tax-collection (TCS) requirements.

FinLex can assess the proposed transaction, explain the applicable FEMA/LRS/Global requirements and help you understand the documentation and funding considerations before you proceed.
Partner-led engagement means direct contact with the Partners throughout.
